5 Star Motorsports was formally launched in 1998, with pole positions and wins coming almost immediately, and good showings continuing through out.
5 Star Motorsports’ team focus has been endurance events, finishing 3rd and 2nd in SSC at the 12 Hours at the Point enduro in 1999 and 2000, and retiring while up front in 2001. The team won the event in 2003, along with the Index of Performance award and in 2006 finished 1st again. The team also finished 4th in the Southeast Region Endurance Racing Series in 2000 and 2nd in 2006. Other successes are 1st in the 2004, 2005 and 2006 13 Hour Charge of the Headlight Brigade Endurance race at VIR. The team also placed a second car in 3rd in 2005 and 2nd in 2006.
The 5 Star Motorsports team principal and lead driver is Joe Leonard, with Dave Zelkowski as Crew Chief. Team co driver is Kolin Aspegren.
In 1999 5 Star Motorsports also went into the rental business. Joe and 5 Star has provided top performing cars to all renters at a fair price. The entire 12 and 13 Hour endurance wins came with Joe and other renters at the wheel.

About Joe Leonard
Joe Leonard is a racing veteran who has had significant success in the grueling One Lap of America from 1990 – 1996. Highlights include a 2nd overall and class victory in ‘91 as well as class victories in '90, '93, '94, '95 and 2nd in class in '96; in fact, his only non-finish was in '92 due to a mechanical failure. Remarkably consistent, Joe and his 5 Star team has never run outside of the top 10 in any race that he’s finished. He is also a certified Driving School Instructor for the Shelby Dodge Automobile Club (SDAC)'s annual events.
Mr. Leonard annually helps raise money for Carroll Shelby Children’s Fund by providing racecar rides at the annual SDAC Conventions If you’re looking for 'aircraft quality' engineering, look no further than Joe – he is a veteran aircraft maintenance technician certified in all areas of aircraft repair.
